Senior Portraits
"Just because we can doesn't mean we should." Senior Portraits.
This quote never had a better application than it does to senior portrait photography today.
There was a time when the goal of the senior portrait session was 1(one) classic image that was to hang in the formal dining room of the parents home.
While the official senior portrait is still, very important and the #1 requested portrait, seniors want multiple outfits with themed backgrounds. In addition to the formal portrait, they add to their collections senior portrait albums gallery wall clusters and phone apps! The number of images needed to fulfill this need brings us back to that old wise statement.
In choosing your senior photographer many factors should be considered.
- Experience. Remember the saying? It fits here too, Just because they have a camera doesn't mean they should be photographing people. I was taught early in my career which has spanned over 35 years, that the eyes are the window to the soul. You have seen it in your search for a photographer, you scroll and scroll and scroll then bam, an image reaches out and grabs you. Why? 9 times out of 10 it is the eyes. Experience allows us to enter a setting, find the right light for your clothing and background, to pose you so your personality shines through your eyes. I will make this happen through directional lighting techniques, reflecting and subtracting light and enhancing available light as needed. You will seldom see me on a portrait shoot with just a camera and a bag.
- Retouching Skill. While this is probably under experience, you will want to look at it separately. Again, just because we can... Over processed images are very commonplace in senior and wedding photography today. Cheap editing tools have made it easy for photographers to add "pop" to underexposed images, however, in doing so you tend to lose the window of your eyes. And of course, you have seen the ones that bend and shape to the point that it doesn't even look real. If Retouching is the first thing you notice, it is not done right. Retouching should blend and enhance the photograph.
- Editing and Creating. An edited image is not simply retouched, or run through a process. There will be creative reasons for adding or removing elements to achieve the image you are looking for. Again, just because we can..
- Finished Product. Your Photographer should offer you a variety of finished portrait products. I will take the time to create your images in the camera for your wall displays, albums, and social media. If I spend the time to do that why would I force you to find someplace that will print what we spent so much time together creating?
In the end, you are in charge we will discuss your portrait need and you will determine the best session for you to direct us in your personal portraits.
